My Findings:
Japan and China are fairly similar countries. They could each benefit a great deal from each other if they weren't so afraid of the others growing influence in Asia. "But Japan is afraid of China’s rise, because the Chinese economy is so much more dynamic than Japan’s. And China is troubled by Japan, because the island nation seems to act as an unsinkable American aircraft carrier just off its coast" (NYTIMES). China is one of the biggest trading empires in the world. Making its economy a strong one. Japan is now one of Americas strongest allies in Asia.
"Increasingly noisy nationalist movements in both countries seem to consider the other country their ancient enemy" (WASHINGTONPOST). Nationalist ideas seem to be one of the roots to Japanese and Chinese conflict. Even the leaders of these countries are promoting confrontation over diplomacy, resulting in the citizens in both countries taking part in anti-Japanese and anti-Chinese rallies. "Anti-Chinese sentiments have been on the rise since 2002" (WIKIPEDIA). This has caused a widespread fear of each other. "Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's hints that he might partially retract Japan's official apologies for its World War II-era abuses in Asia" (WASHINGTONPOST). Japan killed close to six million Chinese people in World War II. This along with China's rise and Japan's decline has made the two countries at great odds with each other for over 1,500 years.
Nationalist ideas, anti-Japanese or Chinese ideas, economics, and the mass killings of people in World War II are what strongly answers why Japan and China do not like each other. I believe that Japan and China's similarities are what really results in their dissatisfaction with each other. China is better of economically than Japan, often times giving them the upper hand. Japan is a strong ally with the United States and that makes China nervous. Both countries increase in nationalism have led them to believe that they are each others greatest enemy. There hasn't been a time in over 1,500 years where the two countries have gotten along. The killing of over six million Chinese by the Japanese during World War II, has been seen as unforgivable and Japanese leaders want to take back their official apology for it. Japan and China will not get along as long as they hold on to their bitter ideals and continue to want to outdo each other in Asia.
